6 Sticky Generosity Quotes from Genius of Generosity - Win a Free Copy!

by Patrick Johnson  |  May 24, 2011

One of my favorite books on communication is Made To Stick by Dan and Chip Heath. In it the brothers explore why some ideas thrive while others die. They also outline specific characteristics that improve the chances of worthy ideas spreading and sticking.

So when we put together the Genius of Generosity with Chip Ingram, we sought to create a number of sticky ideas when it comes to generosity that would empower church leaders to communicate effectively. We want the ideas of generosity to stick in people’s minds so that beliefs begin to shift and practices start to change toward the generous life that God intended for each of us.

So here are my 6 favorite sticky generosity ideas from Genius of Generosity:

“To be smart, spend carefully. To be wise, save regularly. To be genius, give extravagantly.”

“Where your money goes, your heart flows.” (Another way to say Matthew 6: 21)

“Stewardship is the path. Generosity is the adventure.”

“Faith increases giving, and giving increases faith.”

“Those blessed by God become blessers for God.”

“Generosity isn’t an act. It’s a way of life.”

Do you want a free copy of the book?

We are giving 20 free copies of the Genius of Generosity to those who respond in the comment section with their favorite quote from the list above. And we are going to up the ante as well. We will give away a book + a Genius of Generosity small group DVD to the 5 people who provide their own “best sticky generosity idea” in the comment section. So if you’ve got a favorite generosity idea that you think will stick in our minds, post it.   We will then use our super secret scientific formula to pick the 5 winners! So good luck.

Favorite quote above: “Those blessed by God become blessers for God.”

Our churches mantra is Life 2 Give. That's our purpose. We were created in the image of God. He was the most extravagant GIVER of all.

My Favorite: "Faith increases giving, and giving increases faith.”

I love this one because it takes faith to continue to increase our giving.

Idea (based on the book): "Spiritual growth, a deeper relationship with Jesus, and emotional happiness are all a direct result of increasing generosity with the resources God provides."

My quote ( borrowed from somewhere ,I'm sure) is that GENEROUS GIVING IS THE BEST ,AND POSSIBLY THE ONLY ANTIDOTE TO MATERIALISM.
Of the ones above ,I like the paraphrase of Matt;6;21 "where your money goes, your heart flows"
Because of this verse, and God's prompting, we are taking our 2,500 client CPA practice into a new planning venture ...that of charitable planning. I want to use the "Genius of Generosity" as a give-away prop. I would be happy to pay for the 20 copies....but I would love if you could ship them

Generosity is a living a life surrendered to Christ! God gave the ultimate gift of His Son...Christ gave His life...We are to give our all for Him!

The secret to life is generosity. It starts with the gift of grace. It cannot be commanded. You live generously for God; not for others. Givining of your time matters as much as giving of your money. It's not something you do out of convenience, or because it feels good on occassion. Yes, indeed it is a way of life.

Some of my "sticky" thoughts are not original and I do not remember where they originated.

"Show them how to give."
"Act your wage."
"For every action there is a reaction."

I especially liked the first quote: "To be smart, spend carefully. To be wise, save regularly. To be genius, give extravagantly" It is awesome and inviting. I believe our best givers have the Spirit lead them to generosity.

"Where your money goes, your heart flows." is my favourite quote from above because we have proved it in churches where we have run planned giving programmes. The giving has increased, and so has people's involvement in the ministries of the church as they realise that they have been making an investment here, they need to do more about it! Great.

My other favourite quote, and it is not one of my own ..."The heart of the matter is that it is a matter of the heart."

I like the first quote because of its unanticipated linkage of genius with generosity. As I look back, I'm aware of several times when I zealously shared something I'd just learned. The zeal of discovery leads naturally to evangelism. If this is true with natural things, how much more is it valid for the resources of God's kingdom.

The quote also reminds me that while authentic genius is measurable not by IQ but by charity, I'd caution us from adopting a strictly numerical metric. Giving can be monitored in terms of dollars or hours spent, but God judges my deeds based on the motives of my heart. Issues of the heart may be difficult to quantify, but, like smartness or wisdom, it's presence (or absence) is noticeable.

I love these quotes--some sound Benjamin Franklin-esq--"To be smart, spend carefully. To be wise, save regularly. To be genius, give extravagantly." All of the quotes are short and pithy so as to be memorable and remembered. My favorite is "Where your money goes, your heart flows." It nails not only a Scripture point but is also backed by research on behavior motivators. I am very interested in reading/previewing this new book but fail to see on the website how to order a single copy?

I like this one--fresh and different...
“To be smart, spend carefully. To be wise, save regularly. To be genius, give extravagantly.”

I want to strive every year to give away a little more than I've given the year before, and to think about growing in generosity rather than just thinking about a percentage. The more I give, the more Jesus is in me.

This is one of the reason why I love doing ministry in the church. I know that God will fill my cup as I serve His people. People are encourage if I serve them, back actually more than any one, I myself is being encourage in witnessing how God touch their life. God is truly amazing!

I love "Generosity isn't an act, It's a way of life." Too often we settle for the act instead of cultivating it as a way of life and breaking the back of the monster of self-centeredness.

"Faith Increases Giving, and Giving Increases Faith"

In this economic day, like so many others, our family has experienced a number of financial changes. Over the years our giving has increased our faith. However, now our faith increases our giving. So what is the difference? We know that God will provide. He has proven it over and over. The stronger our relationship with Him the more we desire to give.

At first the quote seems backward, but in actuality it is more like an unending circle. It depends on where you are in your relationship with God.

My favorite quote is "Where your money goes, your heart flows." Love that. And it's so true!

Another "sticky generosity idea" that I've heard somewhere along the way and use frequently is this: "God wants us to be a river, not a reservoir. He wants his blessings to flow through us & not just stop in us."

"Generosity isn’t an act. It’s a way of life."

So true! In my work with churches through Crown Financial Ministries, I spend a great deal of time talking about God's Economy... the divine integration of God's Lordship with out Stewardship and Generosity. I'm regularly asked "what's the difference between Stewardship and Generosity. The above sticky quote will help me "stick" the difference in their minds! Thank you for generously sharing these sticky ideas!
